Rispetto ai 5, 2 milioni di stranieri che vivono in Italia (8,8% della popolazione), più di 5,8 milioni di italiani hanno scelto di vivere stabilmente all’estero, pari al 9,8% della popolazione – in prevalenza in Europa (in particolare Germania, Svizzera e Francia) e America del Nord e del Sud (segnatamente USA, Argentina e Brasile).
Anzi, a partire dal 2006 la presenza degli italiani all’estero registrati all’AIRE è progressivamente cresciuta, passando da 3,1 milioni agli attuali 5,8 milioni – segno anche di un approccio differente all’emigrazione, incentrato più sulle qualità positive di opportunità di incontro e di arricchimento reciproco con modelli culturali diversi che sullo svilimento e sulla necessità economica di abbandono.
I processi di globalizzazione del lavoro, delle economie, delle società hanno portato ad una mobilità circolare, sopratutto intra-europea, che riguarda in particolare le giovani generazioni e i giovani adulti.
