I dati della XVII edizione del Rapporto Italiani nel mondo indicano che la comunità dei cittadini italiani ufficialmente iscritti all’AIRE (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero) ha superato la popolazione di stranieri regolarmente residenti sul territorio nazionale.
Rispetto ai 5, 2 milioni di stranieri che vivono in Italia (8,8% della popolazione), più di 5,8 milioni di italiani hanno scelto di vivere stabilmente all’estero, pari al 9,8% della popolazione – in prevalenza in Europa (in particolare Germania, Svizzera e Francia) e America del Nord e del Sud (segnatamente USA, Argentina e Brasile).
Anzi, a partire dal 2006 la presenza degli italiani all’estero registrati all’AIRE è progressivamente cresciuta, passando da 3,1 milioni agli attuali 5,8 milioni – segno anche di un approccio differente all’emigrazione, incentrato più sulle qualità positive di opportunità di incontro e di arricchimento reciproco con modelli culturali diversi che sullo svilimento e sulla necessità economica di abbandono.
I processi di globalizzazione del lavoro, delle economie, delle società hanno portato ad una mobilità circolare, sopratutto intra-europea, che riguarda in particolare le giovani generazioni e i giovani adulti.
